The Judicial Duties of the Judge of Probate Office are:

  • Probating Wills and Estates
  • Mental Health Involuntary Commitments
  • Guardianships and Conservatorships
  • Adoptions
  • Name Changes
  • Condemnations/Eminent Domain

Administrative Duties include:

  • Issuing vehicle registrations, business licenses, boat registrations, manufactured home registrations, Driver's License Renewals, State ID renewals
  • Issuing Notary Public Authorizations
  • Manage County Elections
  • Maintaining Records of:
    • Deeds and Deeds of Conveyances
    • Preserving documents, files, papers, and letters as required by law
    • Indexes of each instrument filed in the Probate Office
    • Election Results
    • Marriage Records, Military Records, Plats, Maps


Judge James Cooper was elected to the Macon County Probate Court on November 6, 2018. Before being elected as Judge of Probate, Judge Cooper spent his early career in Information Technology at Tuskegee University, where he served in administrative computing, academic computing, online learning, and technology infrastructure design.
